Blithe Spirit

by Noel Coward

Directed by: Michelle Maccarone

Synopsis: A smash comedy hit in London and New York, this much-revived classic from the playwright of Private Lives concerns fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, who has remarried but finds himself haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira. Clever, insistent and well aware of Charles' shortcomings, Elvira is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” the eccentric and flighty Madame Arcati. As everyone's personalities clash, Charles’ current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed. She “passes over” and joins Elvira, allowing the two “blithe spirits” to haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.

The Heights Players is located at:
26 Willow Place, bet. State & Joralemon Streets
in Brooklyn Heights.

  • EDITH CONDOMINE – The Condomine’s maid, Edith is always in a hurry.

  • RUTH CONDOMINE – A smart looking woman in her mid-thirties, Ruth is the wife of Charles. She is a bit jealous of Charles relationship with his first wife.

  • CHARLES – An intelligent and urbane English novelist. Charles is the husband of Ruth and deceased first wife, Elvira.

  • DR. BRADMAN - A pleasant-looking middle-aged man, a friend of the Condomines.

  • MRS. BRADMAN - The wife of Dr. Bradman, middle-aged and a bit faded.

  • MADAME ARCATI – A middle-aged spiritualist, a striking woman. She is not too extravagant but has a definite bias towad the barbaric.

  • ELVIRA CONDOMINE – Charles Condomine’s deceased first wife, Elvira returns as a ghost with a goal. In the process, she makes Charles and Ruth’s lives very complicated.

Pre Show Cast: For this production we will have a preshow upstairs in the auditorium and the path towards the theatre. The upstairs auditorium will be transformed into the town's "Society for Psychical Research" branch. We will need improvisational actors to act as mediums, ghosts, tea leaf readers, spirit board operators, tarot card readers among other roles. These roles would have an abbreviated rehearsal period and these actors may also be understudies for the show's cast.
