It's Only A Play

by Terrencce McNally

Directed by Laura Chartrand

Assistant Directors: Isaiah Lemelbaum

Stage Manager: Monica Ramirez

Synopsis: It’s the opening night of The Golden Egg on Broadway, and the wealthy producer Julia Budder is throwing a lavish party in her lavish Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs, the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a group of insiders have staked themselves out to await the reviews. The group of insiders includes the excitable playwright; the possibly unstable wunderkind director; the pill-popping leading lady, treading the boards lightly after becoming infamous in Hollywood; and the playwright’s best friend, for whom the play was written but who passed up this production for a television series. Add to this a drama critic who’s panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town aspiring singer, and you have a prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuses the theatre- and for comedy.

Please note that The Heights Players is a non-profit theater and this is a non-equity production. All cast and crew volunteer their time and talent. The Heights Players is a membership organization, there is no pay or stipend for any role or position. There is a $20 membership fee, if cast.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Peter Austin: The anxious playwright whose career hangs in the balance, desperate for his play to be a hit.

James Wicker: A former stage actor turned television star and Peter’s best friend, who turned down a role in Peter’s play.

Julia Budder: The first-time producer of “The Golden Egg,” known for being a genuinely nice person amidst the theatrical drama.

Virginia Noyes: The star of the play, a somewhat unstable actress who is dealing with addiction issues.

Frank Finger: The egomaniacal and “genius” British director of the play. (The character of Frank will have a British accent.)

Ira Drew: An insecure theater critic with aspirations of his own, who is known for his critical reviews.

Gus P. Head: A polite, somewhat naive young man from the farm who works as the coat check attendant and harbors dreams of a Broadway career. (The character of Gus should be comfortable with singing on stage and have a relatively nice voice.)
